In Your Name To Serve and To Sacrifice

When God calls us to lead His people, He also gives us a model to follow in His Son Jesus. Like Jesus the Good Shepherd, I feel I am called to serve His people and care for them till it hurts, to sacrifice every thing, including myself

Due to its establishment many new colonies like the EB colony, Thiagarajanagar, TVS Nagar, LIC Colony, P&T Colony etc. sprung up around this office. Many catholic families also bought the house sites in this area and they settled in their houses. But as there was no Catholic Church in this area the catholic had to go by bus or other way for Sunday Mass and other religious functions to St. Xavier’s Cathedral, St. Xavier’s College Church, and Sacred Heart Church of the Brothers Union etc. So the faithful approved the parish priest of St. Xavier’s Cathedral Rev. Fr. Maria Michael and asked him to say mass in that area. The father said he was will to say mass provided there was a proper place in that area. It was almost the end of December 1981. They were looking for house and came across a small house, which was owned, by the diocese. And one Mr. Rayappaan a catholic was staying in the house. When the faithful approached him for saying holy mass he was ready to vacate the house. One of such incident was a boy was admitted to the Govt. Hospital at the high ground and he was almost sinking. His father came to the church washed the foot of St. Jude’s Status and gave the boy to drink the water. To his surprise the boy recovered miraculously and finally he was discharged from the hospital in a healthy condition. After Fr. Maria Michael, Fr. Susai Marian who the Procurator of the diocese saw the response of the people, and said the mass in that church on all days of the week except on Tuesday and Fridays. As church was overflowing on Sundays, he extended the church with RCC Roofing to accommodate about 400 people. At the time a carpenter by name Madasamy has swelling on both his knees and he was unable to walk. He plucked some neem tree leaves in the neem tree, which is in front of the church kept in the foot of St. Jude’s Statue and then applied on his knees. Brief History                     :

THE HISTORY OF THE PALAYAMKOTTAI PARISH

Our separated brethren had long ago built a centenary hall to commemorate their arrival in Palayamkottai. Though our arrival had been far earlier than that of our separated brethren, we have not yet established our precedence by any public memorial of that kind so far. But the catholics of Palayamkottai did not wish to give up their turn of celebrating a centenary when their parish church became a centenarian in 1963. So, even though five years had elapsed, they celebrated the centenary of St. Francis Xaviers’s Church on the 29th July 1968. On the previous day his grace Most. Rev. P. Justin Diraviam D.D., J.U.D. Arch-bishop of Madurai consecrated the new altar. On the 29th morning Very Rev. Fr. A.M. Varaprasadam, Jesuit Provincial of Madurai concelebrated with 6 priests at the new altar. In the evening he presided over the public meeting to celebrate the centenary.

Perhaps the centenary celebration of St. Xavier’s Church may make one think that Catholicism in Palayamkottai is only a century old. But it is not so. Already in the beginning of the 17th century the catholic church had establishments in Palayamkottai and other nearby places. In 1644 Paleam (Present Palayamkottai) had a chapel dedicated to the blessed vergin Mary and there were 70 Christians probably of depressed classes and of a few parava families. There was another chapel at Puduchandai or Sandaipettai as it is today called just 12 k.m. north-east of Palayamkottai near Seevalaperi.

Nevertheless only in 1838 Palayamkottai became the main catholic centre of the Southern district. Leaving Madurai in April 1838 fathers Martin and Louis Du Ranquet came to Palayamkottai and made it a centre of their labours in the Tirunelveli region. At that time there were fifty catholic families in palayamkottai. About a hundred paravars induced by the fishing trade, and some Vellalahs employed as clerks in the government departments or in the mission service were added to the original population of catholics bringing up the number to 1031. The modest chapel, erected originally becoming very small, was replaced by a larger cruci form church. This too soon became not spacious enough for the growing population and in 1860 the construction of a new church with three naves and in the gothic style began; but the work was finished only after three years. On the 29th June 1863 the church was blessed and dedicated to St. Francis Xavier. However, after one hundred years, when the catholic population was grown to over 8000, the need for enlarging the church was felt by the parish. After much hesitation and in the midst of much discouragement, Fr. V.X. Arulanandam managed by his persistent efforts to extend the church on the western side. Leaving the old structure infact the extended part has a main nave with two wings. The work began in 1957, but was completed only in 1959. The Rt. Rev. Roche Agnisami, Bishop of kottar blessed the church on the 25th  January 1959.

The Herculean efforts of Fr. Arulanandam gave us an enlarged and majestic church. But owing to some unavoidable circumstances, the inner roof, the sanctuary, the permanent altar and the spacious sacristy remained unfinished for another ten years. In 1968 these unfinished items were accomplished by the generous efforts of the leading parishioners.

It may not be out of place to quote here the words of our former Arch-bishop Peter Leonard S.J. so that one may realize the importance of the centenary  church: “Even since its inauguration, a hundred years ago, the beautiful church with its conspicuous berfry has stood out prominently not mercly as a land mark dominating the surrounding high ground and drawing the attention of the casual visitor, but particularly as a fitting monument of faith and piety, the hallowed house of the Lord, where the devout believers could rally round the living God. It is here that three generations met to honor to their God, Kneeling in common prayer, joining in     songs of praise and thanks giving, attending the great mystery of Christ’s sacrifice; here they met to implore the divine blessing, to hear the world of God, to nourish their souls at the Eucharistic table; here they drew strength and inspiration for their daily task, to live up to their Christian calling, to find consolation in suffering, in mourning and daily trials”.

No wonder that the parishioners of Palayamkottai take a legitimate pride in their church, particularly now that  it has been worthy of the noble purpose it serves – well, may they say with the psalmist: “Welcome words, when I heard them saying, we will I heard them saying, we will go into the Lord’s house” (Ps. 121).

The same church was made the cathedral of the new diocese of Palayamkottai in 1973 when its first Bishop Rt. Rev. S. Iruthayaraj D.D., D.C.L. took charge of it. It is to be noted that the dedication of the Cathedral has not yet taken place. Moreover, it is to be felt that an extension of the present cathedral or construction of a new cathedral is an urgent need.

On the 29th May 2005 as a memorial of the Eucharistic year 2005. Bishop Rt. Rev. A. Jude Paul raj D.D. blessed and opened the adoration chapel which is the modified portion of the sanctuary of the old church.

Brief History                     :Indeed Puliyampatty is an insignificant small village. It is an absolute face that this remote village earned name and fame only because of St. Antony’s Shrine. The authentic documents regarding this shrine were traced out by Rev. Fr. Moumas, S.J. But these records also tell the story and history only from the year 1851. From the diary of Rev. Fr. Gregoire, S.J. It is crystal clear that the missionaries build the 12×10×12 valuated chapel as the “Pillar of the pilgrim centre”. His tiresome services are countless. The open shed constructed recently at the cost of Rs. 6 lakhs fully donated by one of his Hindu relatives for the welfare of the pilgrims, is the apex of his love for this growing shrine. One can fervent ally believes that his deeds indeed would reap an abundant harvest of spiritual fruit.

Brief History                     :In the olden days Puliyangudi was one among the various sub-stations of vast and versatile Parish Sendamaram. St. James Church of Puliyangudi has its old history which tells vividly the story of the spread of Christianity. From the authentic documents it is known has Christians were living in Tadampatti, Punnaiyarpuram, and Nadupatti even in 17th century. If we go through the 18th century Tamil Nadu History we can find out the blood shed of the Christians caused by the Muslims. The same unwanted incident happened in Tadampatti also. The Church was destroyed by the troops of Navab in 1736. Their fantiasm paved the way for a fantastic growth of Christianity. They ferventualy hoped that Christianity would fade away but actually it flourished. Really their destruction helped for the concrete construction of Christianity. After the ruin of Tadampatti the 20 Christian families took refuge at Punnaivanam, where St. James Church was built with the help of Talaivankottai Zamindar. Again the Church was rebuilt by one Gnanapragasam Pillai, and was complied by his son Viagappa Pillai. Later it was remodeled by a Christian Moopanar of Sendamaram. In June 1968 Puliyangudi was detached from Sendamaram and became a separate Parish with Rev. Fr. P. Gnanapragasam as its first Parish Priest. A decent house was built at cost of Rs. 40,000 and blessed by Rev. Durai Raj on 20th June 1976. The centenary of this Church was celebrated on 26.06.1983. During his period, people were well brought up in spiritual life. The centaury of this church was celebrated on 26th June 1983. The entire Priest those have been there, have put their whole spirit to develop the people economically and spiritually. People are saying devoted and faithful.

Brief History                     : Sankarnagar is situated in the main trunk road of Madurai. There is a famous Sanker Cement Factory. Due to the job opportunity many people settled here. Good number catholic also came and settled here. In order to foster the spiritual life of these people. It was decided to Most. Rev. Bishop Irudayaraj to erect as a new parish. Parish was created on 22.05.1983. This was carried from Pettai parish. Three villages from Puliampatti Parish were added to the new parish. Rev. Fr. S.A. Annasamy was the first Parish Priest. From 1910 Puliyampatty was administered by the Pannerkulam parish priest. The active priests achieved many things by their aspiring activities. For instance Fr. Siluvai frequently visited Puliyampatty from Pannerkulam and said mass. In 1913 he put up a small mandapam with mud walls. In 1919 one thatched room for the priest was build by him. In 1920 Rev. Fr. Blasius took the charge of Pannerkulam. Knowing the importance of this shrine he did some tiresome deeds for its improvement. It 1923 Rev. Fr. B. Dilinger, S.J. bought a land and built up the presbytery with two rooms and a Veranda. Again a land was settled by him in 1931 where he built up shed for Chapparams. During the region of Kuruvilla, S.J. as he found a good number of pilgrims frequenting the shrine, he allowed his assistant Fr. S. Savariraj to stay at Puliyampatty from 1939. In 1943 Fr. T.V.D. Almeida, S.J. put up a mandapam for the pilgrims. Meanwhile the Pannerkulam parish was divided and the new Parish Alavanthankulam was divided and the new Parish included with the new Parish as a sub station. There after a priest began to reside here permanently. The important landmark took place in 1954. It was on the auspicious day of 15th Feb 1954 Puliyampatty became the separate parish with Ref. Fr. A. Mariadas as its first Parish priest. He started an elementary school for local children. In 1955 Rev. Fr. Arulanandam took charge, and he gave his sincere service more than 18 years to the shrine. During his time the elementary school was upgraded to higher elementary school. A branch post office was opened in the Church premises. Another most important event was the extension of the little church to the size of Cathedral Church, and it was blessed by the most Rev. J.P. Leonard S.J. D.D. the Archbishop of Madurai on 13.06.1961. After Fr. Arulanandam, Fr. T.A. Berchmans served here for 5 years. He did so many things for the convenience of the pilgrims including the Thar Road, and also the Bus convenience. At present this shrine is flourishing in so many aspects. The whole credit goes to Rev. P. Gnanapragasam, the present parish priest who can be well addressed.

Once the Maravar Lord of Chokkanpatti was saved from an eminent danger by the freely bestowed blessings of our Lord. His heart sprang up on gratitude and he built up a chapel with the stones of a dilapidated Hindu Temple. In 1798 this new Chapel was blessed by a Goan Priest, as the Society of Jesus was suppressed and oppressed in 1773. Now this sanctuary serves as sacristy for the new Church built by Rev. Fr. J. Ignatius, S.J. in 1887. The Parish of Sendamaram was created in the 1st January 1878 with Rev. Fr. J. Ignatius as its first Parish Priest. Previously it was under the Jurisdiction of vast area, including Pettai, Viravanallur, Cheranmahadevi, Tenkasi, Karuthapillaiyur, Uthumalai, Chidambarapuram, Velayudapuram and Sundarnachiapuram. Rev. Fr. J. Ignatius served here from 1878 to 1917. He dedicated himself completely and rendered his countless service in this parish. That’s why countless Hindus enter into Catholic community to seek eternal life. In Chief centres, stone chapels were built in small villages Cheap Palmyra leaves covered the prayer houses. In 1908 a fine presbytery was built and the old one was handed over to the Seven Dolores Convent which was established in the same year. During the auspicious occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Rev. Brief History                     :About 200 years ago the Catholic community converted by St. Francis Xavier and other Catholic community from Somantheperi came and settled in Mylapuram near Mukudal. The cash and conflicts between the two groups paved the way for the migration of the community and the creation of Singamparai. The Catholics from Somanthaperi bought the northern side of Mylapuram from a Muslim land-lord of Pettai and settled there with the help of Rev. Fr. Paul Nather, the visiting missionary. There after it was named as Singamparai. A small chapel was built here and the statue of St. Paul was installed in it, which was removed from the Church of St. Peter and Paul at Mylapuram. The origin of this new hamlet of Singamparai dates as far back as 1845. Till 1901 Singamparai was under the jurisdiction of Sendamaram during which period the Chapel was enlarged with a titled roof in 1894. Then it was included with Viravanallur, and Rev. Fr. Gabriel laid the foundation for the present Church in 1991. The construction of the Church was completed in 1929 by Rev. Fr. A. Couturier S.J. who also built up quarters for the priest. In 1931 Singamparai was made a separate parish and Rev. Fr. A. Couturier became the first parish priest. He sowed the seeds for good education by starting schools for boys and girls separately. In 1938 the sister of the Immaculate conception were brought from Madurai and they did their best for the betterment of the Parish. Indeed Fr. Couturier uplifted the undeveloped parish in so many ways. Rev. Fr. T. Kurian S.J. Rev. Fr. S.A. Antony Metha S.J. and M.V. Diaz served under Fr. Courturier as Assistant Parish Priest. His amicable and amicable character won the hearts of his parishes, and he was respected to such an extend that they celebrated the Golden Jubilee of his entrance in to the Society of Jesus in 1938 in a grand manner. Fr. Couturier was succeeded by Fr. R. Visuvasam in 1941. The successors were also successful in many aspects. This old Parish celebrated its Golden Jubilee during the time of Rev. Fr. S.L. Arulappan. All priest, who served there took the interest in improving the standard of people life. So many developmental work had been carried out. The school which was only middle, was upgraded up to 12th Standard. Thus the Female Literary was encouraged.

Brief History                     :Tenkasi is considered one of the most Sacred places in South India. Christianity was already there in the 17th century. It is mentioned in the Annual letters of 1662 – 1665. Fr. Antony De Proenca in 1662 and Fr. Balthazar De Costa in 1663 preached there the Gospel. There was briefly among the people about the angels apparition. In the town of Polegam, the chief town of the Southern Province, and Adi-Dravida called Valente, equally Valiant by name and faith, converted a yogi who at baptism took the name of Rayappan. Now here is what happened to Rayappan still a….. in the town of Tenkasi. In that town there was a Christian couple. They had two children. One died and the other was seriously ill. The parents had just been baptized. The grief at the loss of their children and the persecution from their relatives gradually began to shake then faith. At that moment, Rayappan came up and hearing of their sad plight consoled and comforted then. But the little child was stalking to his death. Without losing sight of his parents, Rayappan watched over the child, gave his sweets and stayed with them still midnight. He thought, he could take some rest before the death of the child and went to the house of another christian called chrysostom. There is the courtyard of the house a pandel (Shed) had been created in which the fathers used say mass when passing through the town. Rayappan went to sleep under this pandel. Scarcely did he shut his eyes when he wake up with fright. He saw himself surrounded with a bright light and first thought that the house was on fire. He hostily got up and called for help, but as soon as he got up the noticed that this light was much brighter than fire. As he sought the reason for it he caught right under a free of the court yard of two young men of an extraordinary and heavenly beauty. The bodies seemed mad like of the first gold. One lad had in his hand a musical instrument like a zither, and the other a banner. Both bent some steps southwards; then one of them bent down and traced out a cross on the ground. Finally both came near Rayappan. The latter asked them who they were. But they beckoning him to hold his tongue went to the door of the dying child called him by his name. Then he saw the child coming four inside smiling and joyful. The Youngman took him in their midst set two lighted candles in his hands and each one taking him by the arm the three of them rose up heavenwards in an extraordinary glitter. Rayappan followed them with his eyes with mixed feelings of joy and admiration. When he was recalled to this senses by the wails, coming from the child’s house. He ran up and told that the child had just beathed his last. Then Rayappan begged the parents to listen to him and in the presence of Chrysostom and other christians related the vision he had seen. Chrysostom wishing to see the spot where the angel had made a cross, recognized that it was the place where an innocent child, his own son had been leuried. As these mewellous things were being told tears dried and wails turned into songs of thanks giving. The parents of the blessed child were confirmed in then faith. As for Rayappan, determined to become a herald of the Gospel, he was baptized and began to study in order to become a adtechist. He served as a ectochist there (extract from a letter of Autony Paoenca 15th August 1666). The old Altar were cross was made by anyles) is still there is the new church. Jude Paulraj issued the order of erecting the new parish on 28th May 2004. Rev. Fr. Francis was appointed as a first parish priest. The Principal church of the new parish is the one existing at Udayarpatty @ Iruthayanagar dedicated to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Brief History                     :Christianity in Uthumalai is recent origin, i.e. the Latin part of the 19th century. Fr. Joseph Ignacy S.J, parish priest of Sendamaram sowed the Christian faith. People were attracted to Christianity by his exemplary way of life. He plunged himself with great zeal joy and enthusiasm in missionary work. One fine day almost 50 families of Marava embraced Christianity. Following these families many other also joined with then do 1892 Fr. Joseph Ignacy SJ, after long preparation on sacraments baptized 225 members. Fr. Joseph Ignacy put up a small thatched shed named after patron of John the Evangelist almost 10 years, people were using this as chapel. When the faithful increased in number and fervor day by day, the father felt to need of constructing a big church. In 1903, a new church was built up 329 christian members generously contributed Rs. 1,000 for this purpose. The presbytery and the school were put up near the church. In 1938 Fr. S. Irudayam became the parish priest of Sendamaram. During his period, people of Uthumalai grew stronger in faith. By his efforts, Uthumalai was carved out of Sendamaram in the year 1946. It was economically erected, as parish on 1.10.1946 by Most Rev. Archbishop Peter Leonard SJ and Fr. A.S. Durairaj became its first parish priest. This parish comprised of a major part of Alangulam panjayat union and small portion of keelapavoor union. Many thatched chapels were constructed social works were carried out during his time. The Jesuit parish priests like Rev. Frs. J. Arulanandam SJ, J. Kuruvila SJ, John Meempillaikavil SJ, and Masillamani SJ have labored hard to improve the life of the catholic and non Catholics of this parish. When Fr. T. A. Soosai was parish priest, people were well brought up in catholic faith he constructed two chapels one in Reddiarpatti and another in Duraisamipuram. The successors also were successful in the administration of the Parish Fr. Soosai Manickam S.J., Fr. F. Joachim, Fr. S. Jeyabalan, Fr. A. Joseph Raj, Fr. Amirtha Raja Sundar, Fr. Aloysius Durai Raj, Fr. Vianney Raj, & Fr. R.J.L. Antony Rai were parish priests in Uthumalai. Though the village of this parish was rural and remote areas, the parish can feel proud for having esteemed educational Institution up to 8th standard. The Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculae Heart of Mary who put their food in their soil on 25th April 1975 are giving their helping hands for the over all development of the parish. Many of the big substations like Vadiyur. Mariathaipuram, and VK Puthur were separated from this parish and added to the parish of Surandai from its inception on 07.06.1994. Some of the other big substations like Nettur, Kavalakkurichi, kidarakkaulam, Reddiyarpatti etc. were separated from this parish. When Nettur was formed in to a separate parish. With substations fallen as the parish priests on 26th June 2002. Hence at present Uthumalai is a smaller parish than it was earlier. The catholic community at Uthumalai still remains a most backward one both educationally and economically.

Brief History                     :Records show the presence of a few Parava Catholics numbering 14 in the area of Viravanallur as early as 1660. The tradition says that about the year 1775 a few families of Sengunthar Mudaliar Community of the place after a conflict with their kith and kin, embraced Catholicism. But in 1801 the partition of the temple between the Catholics and the Hindus of the same community, took place. Out of 7 pagodas 4 were given to the Catholics. Utilizing the same stones and pillars of the four pagodas, a church was built in Goan style under the patronage of St. James. Even to-day we can see the ancient Hindu Temple on the western side of the Church. Till 1844 Viravanallur was under the Parish of Kamanayakkanpatti. After 1844 Andipatti became the parish centre. In 1878 Sendamaram was detached from Andipatti and so Viravanallur came under Sendamaram. Due to the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773 and due to dearth of missionaries Christian practice was affected. A few Hindu customs entered into the Catholic Sengunathar community. For instance in 1850, girls of 5 years and 7 years were proposed to marry the boys of 13 years and 14 years. When this news reached the ears of Rev. Fr. Verdier, the then superior of Palayamkottai, he rushed to Viravanallur and put an end to such proposals. The present Market place was purchased from one Manuel Fernando in 1867 by the Catholic Mission for the Church. At this period the number of parava families increased, because they emigrated from placed like Koodutalai, Kootapanai, Idinthakarai, Periatalai, Uvari etc., and selected here for trade. In 1868 a few catholics became protestants but soon they were reconciled to Catholicism through civil court. In 1901 Viravanallur was detached from Sendamaram. Rev. Fr. Maria Louis became the first parish priest. From that day onwards it has tremendously grown in all perspective. All the priest who had been here dedicated their service to the betterment of the people. Many developmental works like construction of the Churches starting the education institutions like school, etc carried out. It had its centenary celebration on 2001 during the period of Fr. Amirtha Raja Sundar.
